Online education in India saw major roadblocks due to the poor penetration of devices. In addition, there were connectivity issues that disrupted the online education model. Better devices were unavailable for many, which is a must for accessibility and better access.

Children’s education went for a toss due to the prolonged closure of factories and offices. As a result, the livelihoods of many professionals went for a toss which impacted the child’s education too.

 As per a report published by Azim Premji University, the lockdown pushed 23 crore Indians into poverty between 2020 and 2021.

Poor accessibility of technology

 After mid-March 2020, more than 25 crore students were forced out of the school. In the Annual Status of Education Report ( ASER 2021), the teachers predicted that the biggest challenge the students faced was the inability to cope. Almost a third of the children in classes I and II, due to poor accessibility, there is a stark divide.

Education is a must to improve society and majorly contributes to social and economic growth. In current times there are inequities in access to the internet and resources. The educational outcomes depend on geographical or economic disadvantages. The fundamental right to education profoundly impacts those coming from poor economical backgrounds.

Focus on expanding education

 If we look at the Indian diaspora, there are around 500 million people in the working-age group. India’s domestic labour market is second only to China’s. It is far more significant than the United States and the European Union.

The World Economic Forum (WEF) reported that India has the second-highest additional employment potential through upskilling. It is expected that 2030 India can add 2.3 million jobs 2030 and will position itself second only to the US.

 If the focus is on expanding education, then the GDP of the country will automatically improve. By improving skilling plans in rural areas and increasing rural youth access to quality jobs and education reskilling, there will be a significant improvement in the GDP.

The government has initiated measures to improve learning outcomes.

Poor penetration of devices

According to surveys conducted by School Children’s Online And Off-Line Learning (SCHOOL) and ASER notified that there were poor outcomes in online education. In 2021 it was noted that only 8 per cent of children in rural areas and 25 per cent of children in urban areas could study online regularly. Unavailability of devices and connectivity issues are the bane of online education in India.

For proper accessibility, access to the device is a must. There must be value-enhancing content in the education system through the online mode.

When we educate a child, the entire family can reap the benefits.   A low-cost tablet will provide students with better access and communication capabilities. If there are multiple language conversion facilities, it can further improve outcomes. It must be noted that a tablet offers far superior value than an economic smartphone.

A tablet can stream audio/video content and AR/VR better. Technology has now got into all the sectors, and it’s the time for digital avatars and mixed reality now.

 It is seen that there are almost 100 new startups that have emerged in the technology sector and are showing a lot of capabilities.

 Need for reforms

The online education system can see an upgrade by unlocking favourable reforms and disruptions. Technology can be used to reverse the learning loss and help sustain the economy.

Online learning has changed the way homeschooling was done previously. In addition, it can come to the rescue of those kids who cannot enrol formally.

 The way learning and teaching are conducted changed drastically. For example, when students are enrolled in school, they get lectures, and when they come back home, they listen to them again for better outcomes.

 In the digital age, learning is happening differently. An online device will be an empowering tool irrespective of the pandemic. Technology advancements can leverage the development goals to create newer models of student-focused learning. By bridging our inequity gaps in education, we can build a better future as they are tomorrow’s future.
